This blog tells the story of Fjord (NOT Rudolph!!) - a little reindeer going to Svalbard with 3 scientists to study glaciers. The team will be in Ny Ålesund for three weeks in July and August. To find out where Svalbard is, what research the scientists are doing, how Arctic fieldwork is conducted, and to ask Fjord and the scientists questions, just have a poke around the site!

The Team

Allen Pope

Allen Pope

Allen is a PhD student at Cambridge University's Scott Polar Research Institute. This project is in support of his doctoral work to use airborne and satellite imagery to monitor glacier change. For more, check out the Science Goals page. Originally from just outside Boston, MA (USA), Allen now lives and works in Cambridge, England. This is his third trip to Svalbard and the farthest North he has ever been.

Gareth Rees

Dr. Gareth Rees

Gareth is a University Senior Lecturer based at
SPRI and a fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge. His research is based on arctic remote sensing
from glaciers and snow cover to reindeer habitat and treeline. You can see his official page here. He is also Allen's PhD advisor.

Jon Peatman

Jon is an undergraduate studying Geography at St. John's College at the University of Cambridge. He will be assisting Allen & Gareth's research and collecting some of his own data on the roughness of a glacier's surface.
